Ripping packs is one of the best parts of the hobby. It’s also the easiest place to overspend. A little planning keeps it fun.
Why set a session budget?
It’s easy to budget for one pack or one break spot and then buy “just one more.” A session budget covers everything you’ll spend in one sitting: packs, boxes, break spots, shipping, and fees.
How to set one
- Pick an amount you’d be comfortable spending on a night out, and could lose entirely without stress.
- Decide it before you start, not in the middle.
- Include shipping, taxes, and break fees.
- When you hit it, you’re done for the session, no matter what you pulled.
Read the odds before you buy
Most products publish odds on the packaging or the manufacturer’s website. Odds like 1:200 packs are an average across a huge print run. You could open 200 packs and not hit one. A card being possible doesn’t make it probable.
Do the singles math
If you want one specific card, compare its sold price with what you’d expect to spend chasing it in packs. The single is often far cheaper.
Signs it’s time to step back
- You keep spending more than you planned.
- You buy more to make up for a bad rip.
- You feel stressed, or you hide purchases.
- It feels like pressure instead of fun.
If spending feels out of control, help is available. In the U.S., the National Problem Gambling Helpline is available 24/7: call or text 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738). If you’re in crisis, call or text 988.
