About TSCA
Built by a collector, for collectors.
The Sports Card Addict is an education and community project focused on one promise: help collectors enjoy the hobby without getting burned.
Meet the founder
Hi, I’m Brian.
Most people think sports cards are just cardboard. I don’t. When I badly needed a healthy outlet, cards became one.
I’m in recovery from addiction, and I live with schizophrenia. I’m not ashamed of either one, and nobody here should feel they have to be. I know how hard it is to find something healthy to hold onto when your mind is racing and everything feels overwhelming.
Cards didn’t fix my life, and they didn’t replace my doctors, my treatment or my support. But they became one more tool in the toolshed, and sometimes one more tool matters. They helped me stay alive by giving me purpose.
How collecting helped me
This is my own experience, not medical advice.
- Purpose. When you’re using and isolating yourself because of your mental health, it’s easy to lose every reason to keep going. Cards gave me something to get up for: something to learn, build and look forward to. That purpose gave me the reason to move forward and to see life in a totally different light. Becoming a collector, a trader and part of a community also gave me an identity that isn’t defined by addiction or a diagnosis.
- Structure. Sorting a box by team, set or player gave me a simple task with a clear finish. When everything else felt out of control, finishing something small and orderly gave my day a shape.
- Joy without the crash. Opening a pack still gave me the rush of not knowing what’s inside, and finding a favorite player or finishing a set felt good, without sending me back to the things that hurt me.
- Focus and grounding. Looking closely at a card, its player, its stats and its details, pulled my attention out of my own head and into the present when my thoughts were spiraling.
- Connection. Isolation is dangerous when you’re in recovery or living with mental illness. Talking cards, trading and celebrating a good pull gave me people to talk to about something good, and reminded me I wasn’t doing this alone.
- Progress I could see. Recovery can feel slow, and some days feel stuck. A collection is something you can look at. Every card added and every set completed was proof that I was building something and moving forward.
Some people call the gym their therapy. They don’t mean a workout replaces a therapist. They mean it clears their head and helps them cope. That’s what I mean by hobby therapy: collecting is my gym. It’s a healthy outlet, not a treatment, and it never replaces therapy, medication or support. The hobby has a risky side too: chasing hits, spending money you don’t have, using packs to escape everything. With purpose, boundaries and community, it can ground you. That’s why this site has a Responsible Collecting page and why we never push you to spend.
Why I built The Sports Card Addict
I’m not addicted to cards. I’m someone in recovery who found a healthier outlet, and I want to help other people find purpose, education and community in the sports card hobby. TSCA is for new collectors, returning collectors and fans at every level, and it’s a welcoming place for people in recovery or living with mental illness. Nobody here will make you feel small for asking a basic question, or for being honest about your story.
If this hits home, you’re not alone here.
I’m a collector and a learner. I’m not a financial advisor, a grading authority, a medical professional or an industry insider. When I don’t know something, I’ll say so. When I get something wrong, I’ll correct it.
TSCA is a hobby community of people who are here to help each other. It is not treatment or professional care. If you’re struggling, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or call the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357 (free, 24/7, US). In an emergency, call 911.
